Lifeguards Wanted!Parks & Recreation Hosts Swim Qualifying Tests to Recruit Summer 2007 Lifeguards

DATE:Daily, Monday through Friday, through mid-April

TIME:4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. (2 tests daily; no appointment necessary)

LOCATION:Parks' Lifeguard School533 West 59th Street (between 10th and 11th Avenues)

DETAILS:The time is now to take a free qualifying test, the first step to becoming a New York City lifeguard. Successful lifeguard candidates will be able to meet the following qualifying test requirements:
Be able to swim 50 yards in 35 seconds or less with proper form.
Have at least 20/30 vision in one eye and 20/40 in the other - without corrective lenses. Glasses and contact lenses are not permitted during the eye exam.
Be at least 16 years of age by the start of employment.
*Please bring to the qualifying test a bathing suit, a towel and a combination lock or padlock (for a locker). Goggles are optional.
Qualifying candidates will be enrolled in Parks' free Municipal Lifeguard Training Program, which is the only certification accepted for employment as a New York City lifeguard. The training program consists of 40 hours of instruction in swimming and rescue techniques, first aid, and CPR. Class sessions typically meet once a week for 16 weeks, with each class lasting approximately 2.5 hours. Upon completion of the training program, candidates must pass a final swim test and a written exam.
Once you begin working as a lifeguard, you will be paid for your time spent in training. First-year lifeguards will earn at least $11.72 an hour, and work 48 hours (6 days) a week. If you become a lifeguard, you will be guaranteed a job for the summer at one of the City's seven beaches or 53 outdoor pools.

The Investment Bank has developed a new BA scholarship, Launching Leaders, targeted to Black, Hispanic and Native American sophomores and juniors interested in financial services. In addition to the academic scholarship ($5,000 for sophomores, $7,500 - $10,000 for juniors), recipients will be awarded a summer internship in corporate finance, sales & trading or research. Important Telephone Tax Refund Questions and Answers for 2006 filing.

What is the telephone tax refund?
The telephone tax refund is a one-time payment available on your 2006 federal income tax return, designed to refund previously collected long-distance federal excise taxes. It is available to anyone who paid long-distance taxes on landline, cell phone or Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service.
Why is the government refunding these taxes?
Several recent federal court decisions have held that the tax does not apply to long-distance service as it is billed today. The IRS is following these decisions and refunding the portion of the tax charged on long-distance calls. The IRS is also refunding taxes collected on telephone service under plans that do not differentiate between long distance and local calls.
The telephone tax continues to apply to local-only service, and the IRS is not refunding taxes charged on local-only service.
The IRS will refund to you the taxes on long-distance service billed to you for the period after Feb 28, 2003 and before Aug 1, 2006. Taxpayers should request this refund next year when they file their 2006 tax returns.
How do I get the telephone tax refund?
In general, anyone who paid the long-distance telephone tax will get the refund on their 2006 federal income tax return. This includes individuals, businesses and nonprofit organizations. The 2006 return is usually filed during 2007.
The IRS is making it easier for taxpayers by offering a standard refund amount between $30 and $60, so they don’t need to gather old phone bills. Taxpayers who choose the standard amount will only need to fill out one line on their tax returns. The standard amount is based on actual telephone usage data and the amount applicable to a family or other household reflects the long-distance phone tax paid by similarly sized families or households. Using this amount is the easiest way for taxpayers to get their refunds and avoid gathering 41 months of old phone records.
Businesses and nonprofits must fill out the new Form 8913 and base their refund requests on the actual amount of tax they paid. The IRS is considering an estimation method that businesses and nonprofits could use for figuring the tax paid and is asking for public suggestions on potential methodologies that are both accurate and relatively easy for taxpayers to use. Who is eligible to request the telephone tax refund?
In general, any individual, business or nonprofit organization that paid long-distance tax for service billed after Feb 28, 2003 and before Aug 1, 2006 is eligible to request the refund.
What is the standard amount?
Individual taxpayers can take a standard amount from $30 to $60 based on the number of exemptions claimed on their tax return. For those claiming:
• one exemption, the standard refund amount is: $30• two exemptions, the standard refund amount is: $40• three exemptions, the standard refund amount is: $50• four exemptions or more, the standard refund amount is: $60
The instructions to the 2006 1040 tax forms will provide more information on how to determine the correct number of exemptions. (Because the term, “exemptions” does not appear on Form 1040EZ, people who fill out this form should follow the instructions carefully.) The standard amount is based on actual telephone usage data, and the amount applicable to a family or other household reflects the long-distance phone tax paid by similarly sized families or households. Using this amount is the easiest way for taxpayers to get their refund and avoid gathering 41 months of old phone records.
What forms do I file to request the refund?
For many individual taxpayers who want to take the standard amount, there are no additional forms to file, and they only need to fill out one additional line on their regular income-tax return.
Individuals choosing the standard amount can simply fill in the amount on Form 1040, Form 1040A, Form 1040NR or Form 1040EZ. People who don't need to file a return can use a new, simple form (Form 1040EZ-T) to choose the standard amount.
Taking the standard amount is optional. It is also the easiest way to get refunds. A married couple filing a joint return with two dependent children, for example, will be eligible for the maximum standard amount of $60.
Individuals who decide not to use the standard amount must figure their refund using the actual amount of tax they paid. To choose this option, taxpayers can fill out Form 8913 and attach it to their regular income-tax returns (Forms 1040, 1040A, 1040NR or 1040EZ, or the new simple Form 1040EZ-T for people who don't need to file a regular income-tax return). .
The standard amount is not available to businesses and nonprofits. Accordingly, they must fill out Form 8913 and base their refund requests on the actual amount of tax they paid. Businesses should attach this form to the income-tax returns they normally file -- Form 1120, Form 1120S, Form 1065 or Form 1041. Nonprofits, including churches, charities and other tax-exempt organizations, attach it to Form 990-T. The IRS is considering an estimation method businesses and nonprofits can use for figuring out the amounts to be included on Form 8913.
How did the government come up with the standard amounts?
Telephone industry and IRS data were used to determine the refundable standard amounts. Telephone industry data showed that long distance spending correlated directly with the number of persons in a household; therefore, a scaled refund structure was selected based on the number of exemptions claimed on the tax return.
Can I e-file to get this refund?
Yes. Virtually anyone who files an individual return qualifies for electronic filing, and the telephone tax refund is one of many tax benefits that can be reported on an e-filed return. Whether you file electronically or on paper, you can get your refund even faster by having it deposited directly into your checking or savings account. I don’t have to file an income-tax return. How do I get the telephone tax refund?
For those people who do not otherwise have to file a tax return, there is a new simple form (1040EZ-T) that can be used to get this refund. If you choose the standard amount, all you need to do is fill out this simple form using the number of exemptions you are eligible to claim. For example, a married couple with two dependent children (for a total of four exemptions) will be eligible for the maximum standard amount of $60.
If you decide not to use the standard amount, you must figure your refund using the actual amount of tax paid. To choose this option, you must fill out an additional form (Form 8913) and attach it to Form 1040EZ-T.
Do internet long-distance plans qualify for the refund?
Yes. If you paid the federal excise tax on your long-distance internet plan, you can request the telephone tax refund.
Why do I only get a refund for the past few years?
Under the applicable statute of limitations in the Internal Revenue Code, the IRS is generally not permitted to refund taxes that were paid more than three years before the date on which the refund program was announced. Accordingly, the telephone tax refund is available for long-distance taxes billed after Feb. 28, 2003, and before Aug. 1, 2006.
How do I determine how much federal excise tax I have paid on my long-distance service?
Taxpayers who choose to base their refund requests on the actual amount of tax paid should review their phone bills since Feb. 28, 2003. Taxes paid on local-only service are not eligible for the refund. In general, federal excise taxes paid on other types of service qualify. Federal access charges and state or local taxes and charges are not eligible for the refund.
On the other hand, taxpayers who choose the standard amount need not determine the amount of tax they paid. What if I don’t know whether I paid this long-distance tax and I don’t have my phone bills?
To get the telephone tax refund, you must have paid the tax. If you don’t have your telephone bills, the only way to be sure if you paid the tax for long distance is to check with your service provider.
Who do I call?
Instructions for requesting this refund will be included with your tax forms and at irs.gov. Therefore, most people will not need to call the IRS. If you decide to figure the actual amount and need to obtain copies of your phone bills, you should contact your phone service provider. Telephone companies may charge for copies of past bills.
What do I have to do now?
In most cases, nothing. Taxpayers will request this refund on their 2006 return. Accordingly, the IRS will begin accepting refund requests in January 2007.
The only decision you have to make is whether to use the standard amount or the amount of tax you actually paid. To take the standard amount, you don’t need to do anything now. You can figure it when you fill out your 2006 return.
If you are considering using the actual expense method, you may want to start gathering your phone bills since Feb. 28, 2003. As with any other line item on your return, starting early and keeping good records always makes the tax-preparation process easier.
Will the IRS pay interest on the refunded telephone tax?
The standard amount includes interest. The IRS will issue guidance later this year relating to the payment of interest where the actual expense method is used.
How do I decide if it’s better for me to use the actual or take the standard amount?
You can use whichever method gives you the larger refund. Do I have to itemize to claim this refund?
No. Because this is a refund of taxes previously paid, it does not matter whether you itemize or take the standard deduction.
Will I get a separate check?
No. The telephone tax refund will be treated as a one-time payment on your 2006 return. Accordingly, it will reduce the amount you owe on your return or increase the amount of your refund. What is the total amount the government expects to refund?
Economists at the U.S. Department of the Treasury estimate the amount refunded to individuals will be about $10 billion.

Girl Blue Project

I am emailing you hoping that you would send out an e-blast to every woman and supporters of women. I run a self-awareness program for teen girls called The Girl Blue Project. This is a FREE 6-8 week intensive program designed to empower young women from a spiritual (not religious) point of view. I designed this program for girls 14- 18 years old. Technically, it is a school that operates Monday through Friday from 8am to 3pm. The curriculum includes: Yoga, Self-Awareness class, Life Coaching, Creative Writing, Etiquette, American Sign Language, Dance, Voice and Acting. Our girls are trained to tutor elementary school kids once a week and we also have special workshops in HIV/AIDS prevention and anything else I think the girls in the community may need to become productive, pro-active adults.
We are a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization. I have funded most of the program over the last three years by using my savings and working additional jobs. So far, we have been operating by individual and in-kind donations. I am proud that we have been self-sufficient and would like to continue to do so. I am starting a "Sista Can You Spare a Dime" campaign to ask every woman I know to get every woman they know to donate $10 or more to keep this program running. We spend more than that at Starbucks. 100% of the money goes to help these young women. The Girl Blue Project must continue and we need your help to do so. Young Women Face Culture Shock in First Jobs

(WOMENSENEWS)--Brooke MacDonald, 25, who started her first job as a paralegal at a large New York law firm, said she was baffled by the dynamics of the workplace.
"I didn't know the extent to which I could assert myself," she said. "It also was unclear when to push for more to do and when to sit back and wait to be asked to do something, especially if you don't have a great manager or a mentor who is really willing to teach you what is important in the job. In school it is easy to know what to do. At work, however, it is more luck of the draw."
MacDonald, like many other young women, found it hard to handle her office's subculture.
"It wasn't clear how you were supposed to interact with bosses and when you are allowed to speak up for yourself. Basically, I didn't know what it takes to succeed besides being really aggressive, an area I wasn't particularly adept at," MacDonald said.
Women now outnumber men in many incoming freshman classes, according to recent statistics. Three-fifths of National Honor Society members are female; women also are reaching parity, if not exceeding men, in a multitude of graduate programs. As of 2000, over 80 percent of women aged 25 to 34 were working, a 17 percent increase from 1975.
And, despite recent media accounts about so-called Gen Y women--those in their late teens and early 20s--wanting to opt out of careers and rear children instead, a March 27 Lifetime Women's Pulse Poll of 801 women indicates a different trend. Conducted for Lifetime Networks by pollsters Kellyanne Conway and Celinda Lake, it found that of three generations of women included, this youngest group of women were the least likely to say they'd leave their careers behind if they didn't need a paycheck.
What Happens at the Office?
But what happens when these young women get to the office?
The subject of women at work has been exhaustively explored, but the majority of what is written focuses on mid-career and older women. For young women starting out--who aren't yet hitting a glass ceiling, having kids and trying to balance it all--few find guideposts or even data about themselves.
A recent search on the Web site of New York-based Catalyst, a leading research and advocacy group on women's career advancement, turned up no exact matches for "young women."
"Organizations do research about things that companies will pay money to discover and that make good headlines," says Amy Dorn Kopelan, president of COACH ME Inc., a nonprofit group based in New York City that helps women with the subtle skills and unwritten rules of work. "Issues surrounding younger or newer workers, male or female, have not been as relevant, or demographically compelling, as they are becoming today."
A stronger area of research, however, is the importance of career mentoring for women of all ages. In 2002, a survey by Simmons School of Management--the Boston-based business school--found women with informal mentors reported a greater number of promotions and higher promotion rates than those without mentors.
Undercurrents Hinder Adjustment
Dr. Anna Fels, a New York-based psychiatrist and author of "Necessary
Dreams:
Ambition in Women's Changing Lives," published in 2004, said that while women's access to education at all levels has improved, their second-class citizenship often kicks in when they hit work.
Alfia Muzio, 23, who graduated from Columbia University in New York last spring, said that entering the work force can be "exciting and full of promise."
But she also said it can be lonely and intimidating. "The men at my office are totally inappropriate," she said. "They say things of a sexual nature, commenting on appearance in an unwelcome way using 'honey' or 'sweetie'
instead
of names. It gets very uncomfortable. One guy actually just got fired for sexual harassment. That kind of stuff would have never happened in college."
According to Equal Employment Opportunity Commissions statistics, women filed 85 percent of all sexual harassment charges in 2004.
Katrina Mosher, 24, who works for a large company outside of Los Angeles, said that navigating the gender dynamics at the office is more time consuming than she ever imagined. "I could get my work done in half the time it takes me, if I didn't have to deal with the good old boys' club that creates the upper tiers of my company."
Mosher said she was also surprised at how differently men and women were received in the workplace. "Men are responded to in a better way during meeting and presentations. If a woman walks in and shows any sign of weakness, she is put under even more pressure."
First Salary Affects Lifelong Earnings
Further complicating the obstacles young women face when they are new on the job is pay equity. Women in general still lag far behind male colleagues, and the overall wage gap means that women earn 77 cents to every dollar earned by a man.

But according to 2005 statistics from the U.S. Labor Department, the gap narrowed to 93 percent for workers under 25 years old, indicating that the gap only widens as women move through their careers and face increasing obstacles to pay equity as they become more senior.
Like many young women, MacDonald said that coming into the work force she didn't know anything about retirement plans or benefits.
"These are things you really should know about when you are planning your life and entering a job," she said.
While many young men are also unaware of financial planning, young women are struggling more financially than their male counterparts. More than half the single young women in the United States are living paycheck to paycheck, compared to only 42 percent of single men, a 2002 study by the Washington-based Women's Institute for a Secure Retirement, found.
Carol Frohlinger, an attorney and co-founder of Negotiating Women, a New York-based company that trains women on how to negotiate for salaries and promotions, says that young women have difficulty asserting themselves in such negotiations and will pay a high price for that. "If you are a female college graduate and you don't negotiate on your first salary, the research says that you will lose out on $1.2 million over the course of your career."
Frohlinger says that businesses should not leave the onus entirely on young women. "This is a big business issue. Companies should be looking at pay inequity and the fact that their talent pool is shrinking and 50 percent of the top talent is women."

Rape drug warning

A woman at a Metropolis nightclub on Saturday night was taken by 5 men, who according to hospital and police reports, gang raped her before dumping her. Unable to remember the events of the evening, tests later confirmed the repeat rapes along with traces of Rohypnol in her blood, with Progesterex, which is essentially a small sterilization pill.

The drug now being used by rapists at parties to rape AND sterilize their victims. Progesterex is available to vets to sterilize large animals. Rumor has it that Progesterex is being used together with Rohypnol, the date rape drug. As with Rohypnol, all they have to do is drop it into the girls drink. The girl can't remember a thing the next morning, of all that had taken place the night before. Progesterex, which dissolves in drinks just aseasily, is such that the victim doesn't conceive from the rape and the rapist needn't worry about having a paternity test identifying him months later.

The drugs effects ARE NOT TEMPORARY- They are PERMANENT!!! Progesterex was designed to sterilize horses. Any female who takes it WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO CONCEIVE. Volunteers are still needed on Monday, February 27, 2006, to help the Department of Homeless Services (DHS) conduct its fourth annual Homeless Outreach Population Estimate (HOPE) to produce a point-in-time estimate of the unsheltered homeless population in New York City. Thousands of volunteers are needed to canvass parks, subways, and other public spaces to estimate the number of people living on City streets. One night of your time will help the City collect vital information used by outreach teams to help homeless people leave the streets for a better life. As of today, nearly 2,000 people have registered - DHS is now specifically looking for volunteers who are willing to participate in Queens.
Volunteers will meet at 10:30 PM on Monday, February 27, at training sites located throughout the five boroughs. After a brief orientation and training, teams will disperse to count unsheltered homeless individuals from midnight until 4 AM. Essence Book Recommendations

ESSENCE magazine has launched The ESSENCE Book Club Recommended Read program, one of the largest book clubs of its kind.
Throughout the year, ESSENCE will select a soon-to-be or recently released, classic fiction or nonfiction title by an African-American author to be highlighted. Book Club members will receive a monthly e-mail containing details of the most recent book selection, links to exclusive author forums, interactive internet chats, chapter previews, upcoming book news and prizes. ESSENCE editors will also provide online discussion questions and reader guidelines about the featured book. In addition, each selected title will feature the Essence Book Club Recommended Read logo on the book’s cover, which will be sold in bookstores throughout the country.
The first selection is New York Times best-selling author Pearl Cleage’s newest book, Baby Brother’s Blues (One World/Ballantine Books.) Cleage is also the lead author profile in ESSENCE’s March 2006 issue, on newsstands now.
For employees based in New York City, on Wednesday, February 22, 1-2 P.M., Bookstop will feature ESSENCE books editor Patrik Henry Bass for a special presentation on the ESSENCE Book Club. Patrik will discuss some of the books written by ESSENCE editors, including his In Our Own Image: Treasured African-American Traditions, Journeys and Icons and Like A Mighty Stream, The March on Washington, August 28, 1963.

TruePotential is an organization dedicated to helping promising students from disadvantaged backgrounds get into law school. This spring, our Access Law School program will provide 15-20 socio-economically disadvantaged students with LSAT instruction as well as guidance on how to navigate the law school admissions process. The program will be held in Manhattan on the NYU School of Law campus.
Thanks to the generous support of the NYU School of Law and The Princeton Review, accepted students will only be responsible for a $25 registration/materials fee.

Tech educators are invited to apply for the 2006 Info Tech Employment
curriculum development grant. The $500. cash grant is to be used to
develop or augment a curriculum in "How to Get a Job in Information

and tools to understand the IT industry and the specialized companies

Chinese New Year NYC 2006

7th Annual Chinatown Lunar New Year Parade & Festival See Pictures from the Chinese Lunar New Year Parade The parade usually winds throughout Chinatown along Mott, Canal, and Bayard streets, and along East Broadway.
Time: 1-5 pm, Sunday, February 5, 2006
Place: Canal Street South

The spectacle features elaborate floats, marching bands, lion and dragon dances galore, Asian musicians, magicians, acrobats and procession by local organizations. Over 5,000 people are expected to march in the parade, which will start at Mott Street and promenade through practically every street in of Chinatown, finally dispersing at Worth Street. The parade is expected to conclude at 3:00 pm, at which time an outdoor cultural festival will take place on Bayard Street featuring more performances by musicians, dancers and martial artists. This event is organized by the Better Chinatown Society.

The Institute for Responsible Citizenship is currently accepting applications for its summer program at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. Each summer, twelve of the most promising young minority male sophomores in the country are given the chance to travel to the nation's capital and engage in prestigious internships while taking rigorous classes at Georgetown. The courses in government and economics are designed to provide these young men with the skills necessary to critically analyze the world's problems while adhering to a deep respect for civil liberties. When the students are not in class or at work, they are often called upon to attend social functions designed to help them network in their field.
Personal meetings with such leaders as Barack Obama, John Lewis, and Clarence Thomas are made possible by the intimate nature of the program.
The program run! s from June 4 - July 29 and is a two-summer
commitment. Tuition and housing are paid for by the Institute,
while students are expected to pay for their transportation and food. In addition, those not placed in paid internships will receive a stipend in the amount of $2500.While there are no major requirements, the program focuses on attracting young men interested in the fields of law, politics, business, academics, and the ministry. You should be a sophomore to apply, however, juniors are considered if they are committed to attending graduate or professional school directly following their senior year.

Healium Inc. launches the "No More Secrets" campaign
Deborah Pointer, co-founder and executive producer of Def Poetry Jam and her business partner, actor, producer and writer Ronald Grant, have created a non-profit organization. Healium Inc.
dedicated to ending child molestation. In early spring they will launch a print campaign which will include bus and subway cards throughout NYC entitled "No More Secrets". The campaign encourages adult survivors to seek professional help and for children not to keep the secret and to tell some one.
Deborah Pointer and Ronald Grant are also in pre-production of the one man show, "Cary Grant's Younger Brother", written by Mr.
Grant.Cary Grant's Younger Brother is an uninhibited, modern, one man show that explores issues related to childhood molestation and the transformative power of the human spirit. Through music, fashion and humor, Cary Grant's Younger Brother pulls at the heart strings
and heals.
Healium Inc.is seeking submission of positive and snspiring short stories and poems from adult survivors of molestation to be included on the web site and/or a book to be published in the future.

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg announced today the creation of the online Affordable Housing Resource Center, which aims to dramatically increase New Yorkers' access to information from more than a dozen City agencies involved in housing matters. The Affordable Housing Resource Center can be found on the web at: www.nyc.gov/housing. The site will provide information and advice on buying and renting in the private market, legal rights and responsibilities, and health tips.

"During my re-election campaign I pledged that City government would combine all of its existing data on available housing into a comprehensive Web site that will also include information on legal services, assistance for building owners and information on City services for tenants," said Mayor Bloomberg. "The online Affordable Housing Resource Center fulfills that promise. In the same way that 311 brings together comprehensive information on City services through one telephone number, this Web site will provide New Yorkers with a single point of entry to affordable housing information."To help more New Yorkers learn about affordable housing opportunities and other critical housing information, 12 City agencies worked together to enact the Mayor's pledge to combine key elements of the City's existing housing data into a comprehensive portal on the City's main Web site, www.nyc.gov. Coming to PBS on Feb. 9th and the 16th from 9PM to 11PM is the four part series Slavery And The Making Of America, produced by Dante James, and narrated by Morgan Freeman. Dante is an incredible filmmaker who has produced many award wining films among them biographies on Marian Anderson and A. Philip Randolph. He worked with the late great filmmaker Henry Hampton at Blackside and was the executive producer of Hampton's last series This Far By Faith: African American Spiritual Journeys.
Slavery And The Making Of America tells the story of slavery from the point of view of the enslaved. The series recognizes the strength, humanity and dignity of the enslaved and redefines them as pro-active freedom fighters not passive victims.

Subject: Come Help us Stop the New York Yankees' Community Park Takeover:

Dear Friends, Family and Community,
New York City’s Bronx community’s (Save Our Parks Organization) is in need of your assistant on the stopping of the New York Yankees propose plan to build a new Yankee Stadium on a Historical Community Parkland for Private Development. Without community notification or input, and despite having alternate land nearby, the New York State Legislature quietly alienated two historic public parks (Mullaly and Macombs Dam Parks) to the New York Yankee Baseball organization for the purpose of building a new 14 story-high mega-stadium in the middle of a residential community! This plan will seize 16 acres of public parkland from the poorest congressional district in the country! The plan would destroy one of the few linear parks of that size in the city and would replace much of the lost public parks with "park features" – an important distinction – spread out over numerous locations up to a half a mile away and at taxpayers’ expense! To add insult to injury, these facilities would be located on the rooftops of garages that the city would have the option of closing to the community on game days! This in a community that suffers from an asthma rate 2 ½ times greater than the city & national average!
This plan was predicated, not on the needs of the community, but on accommodating a privately owned business. These parks would be lost to the neighborhood for no other reason than the NY Yankees’ claim that they would make less money if they built at their current site and played at another location during construction. The community is vehemently opposed to the loss of these parks!
We are fully aware of and supportive of a vital need for economic development in the Bronx. However, we support sensible, responsible development. A plan that respects the integrity of the neighborhood not destroys it. A plan that works for the community, but not against it. A plan that provides desperately needed permanent jobs with living wages and health benefits. A plan that provides sorely needed park improvements and additional park services (money is already allocated). All of this can be accomplished. There are many benefits for the Yankees to build a new facility and remain in the Bronx; however, taking away scare public parkland is not one of them. Our parks and open spaces are desperately needed in this community. We as working, voting citizens deserve better!
For over 100 years, these precious parks have played a vital role in the lives of thousands each day and now we ask your support to protect them. The precedent that has been set means any park could be next. Any additional support would be greatly appreciated. Now is the time to join forces and stop this takeover!
What we will need is your support with putting the word out about this issue to all your friends and family Via email, Blogs or Online Forum. Also, if anyone will be in the NYC area on January 11, 2006 please to attend the City Planning Commission Meeting on this Issue. The Meeting will start at 10:00am. We would love your support. Also, if you can’t come the meeting, we will like for you to write a letter to the City Planning Commission office on our behalf…

Robert H. Schaffer and Associates (RHS&A) is looking for full-time interns to support its World Bank funded international development work during the summer of 2006. Based on our needs, interns will be assigned to support the implementation of programs focused on public health, education, or rural development in Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, or Sierra Leone.
Responsibilities: The intern will support capacity-building activities targeted to a diverse group of national government, local government, and community actors who have mobilized to tackle urgent national challenges.

More specifically, the intern will support the participatory development, implementation and evaluation of challenging short-term initiatives, using the Rapid Results Approach - a methodology develop! ed by RHS&A. The intern will lead participatory workshops on the Rapid Results Approach to community stakeholders and to specific Rapid Results teams; facilitate the goal setting, action plan development, and monitoring & evaluation of individual Rapid Results teams; provide mentorship to local consultants supporting this work, and foster cooperative partnerships with key implementation partners.

Airfare and stipend: RHS&A will provide airfare and a modest living stipend.
Requirements: Applicants must demonstrate excellent written & oral communication and management skills in diverse settings and cultures.
Professional experience in developing countries is strongly preferred.
Applicants must demonstrate flexibility and ability to work autonomously as well as part of a team. Relevant work experience in community development is preferred. Proficiency in foreign languages is preferred, especially French, Spanish, P! ortuguese and Arabic.

Hangover Helpers: Beyond Sheep Eyes

THE last time Nan Anane, a graphic designer in San Francisco, had one beer too many during a night out with friends, his first stop the next morning was to his local Mexican taqueria, where he ordered tostadas made with ceviche, uncooked fish cured with citrus juice. "It really brings me back from that headache and bodyache," he said. "Something about near-raw fish really breathes life back into you."

Outer Mongolians are said to have feasted on pickled sheep eyeballs in tomato juice. Cattle ropers in the Old West supposedly sipped tea brewed from rabbit dung. Russians have been known to drip vodka over fatty sausage into a tumbler and then drink it. Long before the ancient Egyptians started raising a beer in honor of the god Osiris, human beings have been in search of hangover relief, and this morning, as people wake up groggy from yet another New Year's Eve, there will be dozens of cures to choose from that go far beyond the traditional Alka-Seltzer.

The Internet has made it possible for anyone to share secret cures, including waffle sandwiches, Pedialyte Freezer Pops and coffee enemas. It has also allowed small-time herbalists and vitamin distributors to market a panoply of packaged remedies trumpeting ingredients like artichoke extract, sarsaparilla root and prickly pear. There's even something called the Wasabi Hangover Bath Treatment concocted from Epsom salts and organic mustard, intended to help you sweat out the toxins.

Though there has been limited medical research into the effectiveness of such cures, the explosion of new products prompted British and Dutch researchers to review the research on popular folk remedies and hangover products. The results, published in late December in BMJ, the British medical journal, found that "no compelling evidence exists to suggest that any conventional or complementary intervention is effective for preventing or treating alcohol hangover" (although the researchers noted "encouraging findings" for borage, a yeast product, and tolfenamic acid, a painkiller).

Foggy heads, however, are ill equipped to process hard scientific data, and most overindulgers faced with the nausea and wobbly knees that often follow an epic bender will simply do what they and their forebears have always done: cobble together a regimen of tried-and-perhaps-true home remedies, usually heavy on fatty foods, salt and blind faith. No dubious news reports will shake their devotion to the beloved and highly specific miracle cure of their own design - say, pizza followed by a shot of the bitter spirit Fernet-Branca, a ginger ale, a multivitamin and two Advils, the preferred tonic of Michelle Idziorek, 33, a technical recruiter in San Francisco.
"I think eating anything that will absorb the alcohol is a good choice," she explained. "But I just can't seem to get my friends to eat some healthy whole wheat toast when we're all really drunk."
Frank Kelly Rich, the editor of Modern Drunkard, a monthly humor magazine in Denver, said that during his years as an Army Ranger in the early 1980's he used to hit up the medics for intravenous saline drips, which, he maintains, brought an instant revival of energy. Since then, he said, he has turned to Propel Fitness Water, explaining, "It has lots of B vitamins and goes down easier than water."

Some hangover remedies involve multiple and specific steps. Casey Cunniffe, 35, a production manager at Time Warner Inc., who lives in Norwalk, Conn., usually ends a night of indulgence with a fried egg sandwich, then wakes up to a vanilla milkshake - and a glass of beer mixed with 7-Up for acute cases, he said. "The hair of the dog thing works, as long as you're not going anywhere," Mr. Cunniffe said. "The milkshake helps cool you down."
Quaint tales about miracle cures available in the refrigerator have survived into the age of nanotechnology in part because even physicians cannot agree on what precisely causes a hangover, said Dr. Jason D. Rosenberg, the director of the headache clinic at Johns Hopkins University.

The symptoms are familiar enough: headache, nausea and grogginess. Most authorities, he said, agree that they seem to be caused by a combination of factors resulting from intoxication by alcohol, including dehydration, dilation of blood vessels around the brain, changes in certain chemical levels in the body and alteration of the sleep cycle.
But no one knows exactly how large a role each of those causes plays, which means that no one knows exactly how to treat them, Dr. Rosenberg said. Besides, he added, certain aspects of the art of hangover management actually do have some basis in science. Salty food, for instance, is not a bad idea, nor are sugary drinks. "You need water and salt to stay hydrated," he said. "But I wouldn't go drinking seawater." The electrolytes - salts - in sports drinks like Gatorade can be helpful, he said.

Other favored hangover balms, however, would seem worthless, he said. Eggs, which many sufferers swear by, are high in protein and cholesterol, but neither of those seems to have anything to do with hangovers. Spicy food will do nothing more "than make your breath smell really interesting," Dr. Rosenberg added. As for the raw fish Mr. Anante relies on, it is of no apparent value, "unless you're a really drunk polar bear."

Hair of the dog, meanwhile, only prolongs dehydration and replenishes the body with toxins. As for fatty foods, they're "a mistake, because the liver can't process all of these things at once," said Dr. Marc K. Siegel, an internist at New York University Medical School. "You're bombarding your liver with a toxin, then bombarding it with fat."
To him the best bet is a cup of coffee, a dash of Mylanta and a lot of water. "It's not sexy," Dr. Siegel said. "But those things work."

As for the number of new hangover products on the market, many are made by small companies and marketed primarily through the Internet, said Mark Blumenthal, the executive director of the American Botanical Council, a nonprofit organization in Austin, Tex., devoted to education on herbal medicines. According to the British study, many of those herbal remedies have not undergone rigorous medical testing.

Mike Pearson, a programmer for an aerospace firm in Los Angeles, took matters into his own hands in 2003 with a Web site called http://www.hangoverreview.com. On the site he and his friends started trying out the handful of commercial remedies then available. Since then, Mr. Pearson said, so many new hangover remedies have entered the market that he has a hard time keeping up.

"Since the hangover cure market popped," he wrote in an e-mail message, "almost all vitamin manufacturers have added some kind of hangover cure to their list."He said many cures could have some value simply because "the basic principle of providing more of the vitamins your body needs to process alcohol is probably going to help to some degree."

While doctors uniformly agree that the only real cure for a hangover is abstaining from alcohol altogether, some concede that the best folk remedies for those who succumb to temptation may be any of them, that is, whatever the individual thinks will work.

Edward L. Burlingame, a retired publishing executive who lives in Westchester County, said he has relied on the same morning-after remedy - a dire brew of beef consommé, Worcestershire sauce and vodka known as a bull shot - for years but allows that faith might be its most potent ingredient.

"There's the truth, and there's the larger truth," he said. "The truth is it probably doesn't work. The larger truth is that if you think it does, it makes all the difference."
Or, in Dr. Rosenberg's words, "If someone thinks something is going to work, they're usually going to get better."

There is another school of thought, however. As Christopher Israel, the general manager of the Ginger Man, a bar on East 36th Street, said, perhaps the best way to deal with a hangover is the most time-honored way, prolonged suffering.

"I wallow in my hangovers," Mr. Israel explained. "If you don't hangover, you didn't have a good time."

one of the Metropolitan's departments—curatorial, education,

workshops, and visits to local cultural institutions. In addition to
contributing to seminal activities in the departments to which
interns are assigned, college interns prepare and lead guided tours
for Museum visitors and assist at the Information Desk two days per
week.

Internship for College Students
This ten-week internship is awarded each summer to college juniors,
seniors, and recent graduates who have not yet entered graduate
school. Interns work on departmental projects (curatorial,
administrative, or educational), give gallery talks, and work at the
Visitor Information Center. Applicants should have a broad
background in art history. Applicants must have completed their
junior year to be eligible for this internship. To be considered a
recent graduate, applicants must have graduated no more than one
year prior to the application deadline—current freshmen and
sophomores are not eligible.

Internship for Graduate Students
This ten-week internship is intended for individuals who have
completed at least one year of graduate work in art history or in an
allied field. Interns work on projects related to the Museum's
collections or to a special exhibition. Specific duties depend upon
the needs of the department.

Metropolitan Museum of Art devoted to the art of medieval Europe.

Volunteer Internships

Unpaid internships for college students, recent graduates, and
graduate students are available throughout the year on a full- or
part-time basis. The number of positions varies according to
departmental needs, and opportunities range from two months to nine
months. Academic credit may be arranged for interns at their
schools' discretion.

Applicants should follow the standard application procedure. Letters
or essays should describe specific areas of interest within the
Museum, precise dates for the proposed internship, and number of
hours per week the applicant is able to work. Application should be
made at least one month prior to the proposed starting date.

Deadline: Applications for all paid internships must be received by
January 20, 2006. Volunteer applications are accepted on a rolling
basis.

There are no application forms. Electronic applications are not
accepted. All application materials should be sent in one envelope.
A typed application should include the following:

Student Programs
The Metropolitan Museum of Art welcomes students to a program of
free classes held after school and on weekends. Both junior high and
high school students have the rare and special opportunity to study
original works of art in the Museum with instructors from the
Education Department. All classes ask students to be active
participants in understanding and appreciating works of art, and to
look and respond through discussion in the galleries or through the
creation of their own works of art in the studio.

Middle and high school students (grades 7-12) can learn more online
about a wide variety of free after-school and weekend classes
devoted to understanding and exploring the Metropolitan Museum.
Classes are free but registration is required.

In the 1950s, American artist Robert Rauschenberg redefined painting
by incorporating real objects into his artworks, saying "I think a
picture is more like the real world when it is made out of the real
world." In this class we explore these enigmatic works in the
special exhibition Robert Rauschenberg: Combines through writing,
drawing, and discussion.

black-and-white photographs of African American musicians, singers,

renowned documentary photographer Ruth Morgan; archival photos from
the Schomburg Collection, including images from Marvin and Morgan
Smith; commentaries by contributing writers; and poetry and prose by

researched and documented the honorees. Participating Harlem schools

harlem is…Music explores Harlem's unrivaled musical tradition and its
rich legacy from James Reese Europe's orchestra of 1910 to its present
institutions and stake-holders. The exhibition examines the
development of Jazz and several other musical genres.

Told through the observant eyes of New York City students, harlem
is…Music tells the story of institutions and legends of the past,
including Minton's Playhouse, The Savoy Ballroom, Park Palace and
Harlem World as well as legends such as Paul Robeson, Bessie Smith,
Thelonius Monk and Dorothy Maynor.

Choose One Idea to Pursue
Don't let having too many ideas keep you from taking action. There are no "perfect" ideas, so just start somewhere. If you feel like you're still looking for your passion, follow these five steps.

Brainstorm
Because it's easy to feel creatively blocked or paralyzed by fear, one of the best ways to overcome your obstacles is to call upon the wisdom of others in a brainstorming session. Learn how to brainstorm and see how three women overcame their obstacles with this exercise.

Find Encouragement
Put an insurance policy in place by finding two or three people to encourage and support your efforts. Turn to these people when you feel afraid, frustrated, resigned or excited about your progress! When you feel afraid (and you will) find support. Follow six steps to create a Passion Support Group.
Take the Leap
Once you have an idea and a plan of action, it's time to do something immediately. Take one step towards your passion right now. Sign up for a class, write a poem, find a mentor or schedule a brainstorming group today. Write down your goals in your journal.

Esperanza del Barrio is a membership led community organization based in East Harlem that assist the self empowerment of low income Latina immigrant sand their families through grassroots organizing, political/legal education,and leadership development. Founded in 2003 by six Mexican immigrant streetvendors, Esperanza works with members from East Harlem, the Bronx, Queens and other areas of Manhattan. We provide an array of services in the areas of community organizing, adult education, business entrepreneurship training, leadership development, health education, children’s tutoring,legal services, and youth development.

Esperanza del Barrio is looking for a coalition coordinator to organize meetings and events, and help to conduct coalition meetings. Esperanza is part of a city-wide coalition of ethnic community organizations dedicated to improving the working and living conditions of street vendors. The coalition, Street Vendors for Justice, is an alliance of street vendor associations, including the Latin American Workers Project, the African Association of America, CAAAV organizing Asian Communities, Vendedores Ambulantes de la 5ta Avenida (5th Avenue Street Vendors, Brooklyn),Vendedores Ambulantes Unidos del Bronx (Bronx United Street Vendors), andEsperanza del Barrio. Street vendors work across cultures and ethnicities to challenge and improve city street vending policies while promoting a positive image of street vendors as a legitimate workforce.
