MAJOR DRUG SWEEP IN FAR ROCKAWAY NETS 43 ARRESTSMajority of Defendants Face Up to 15 YearsOn February 3rd, Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown and Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly announced the indictment of 24 alleged drug peddlers and the arrest of 19 others for hawking drugs near the New York City Housing Authority's (NYCHA's) Redfern Houses and the privately owned Dix McBride Apartments, both in Far Rockaway.Full Story

In the face of an ever-rising budget deficit, NYCHA must take immediate steps to address ongoing increases in the cost of operating public housing. As part of NYCHA's 2006 Spending Plan adopted by the Board on December 28, 2005, certain fees which have remained unchanged for years, are being increased. Full Story
CAREER EXPO AT WILLIAMSBURG COMMUNITY CENTERFifty-two residents who live in City Council Member Diana Reyna's District (District #34) came to the glass-enclosed Williamsburg Community Center on the evening of February 2nd to learn about job and career opportunities at NYCHA's first Career Expo of the year.Full Story
BOROUGH DIGESTBronx: Over 1,000 youth from the five boroughs attended an African-American History Month Celebration on February 22nd at the Bronx Zoo. Highlights of the day, made possible by a collaboration between NYCHA and the Wildlife Conservation Society headquartered at the zoo, included a performance by the NYCHA Youth Chorus, a drum and dance routine by children from the Sackwern Community Center and the Harambee Dance Company, a scavenger hunt, and an African safari!Full Story
HOMEOWNERSHIP INITIATIVE FOR WESTERN QUEENSA homeownership initiative is being offered to residents of Queensbridge, Ravenswood, Woodside and Astoria Houses in Queens, thanks to a collaboration between the East River Development Alliance (ERDA), Neighborhood Housing Services, Chase Bank and the Freddie Mac Foundation. BOARD APPROVES CAPITAL BUDGET FOR 2006The New York City Housing Authority's (NYCHA's) Board approved the 2006 Capital Budget at its January 25th Board Meeting, after a presentation by Deputy General Manager Joseph Farro at Central Office. The Capital Budget will allow the Authority to proceed with ongoing and new projects related to the maintenance and modernization of NYCHA's developments.Full Story

WARNING AGAINST USE OF ILLEGAL PESTICIDESAccording to a recent New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) report, one in three households in New York City uses pesticides that may be hazardous to their health. Insecticidal sprays, bombs and foggers are used in 63% of households with cockroaches, while 9% of households with pests use Tempo®, a product that is illegal to sell for personal use in New York.Full Story
THE NYCHA "NOT WANTED" LIST In this issue we continue our editorial policy of publishing the names of individuals who have been permanently excluded from our public housing developments. This list is part of NYCHA's effort to keep residents informed of the Housing Authority's ongoing effort to improve the quality of life for all New Yorkers in public housing and to allow for the peaceful and safe use of our facilities. Here follows a list of the people excluded after hearings were held on February 23, March 2 and 3, and April 20, 2005.Full Story
